Skincare Diary: Part 1
I've been wanting to change up my routine for awhile now and have bought a few new products that I want to integrate into my routine by swapping them with products from my current routine. I've decided that in order to introduce these products I'm going to have to do it a week at a time. The swaps I'm making from old products to new products are:
Last week I started using the Simple Daily Skin Detox Purifying Facial Wash, which claims to deeply cleanse for controlled shine and clear skin. It contains witch hazel, thyme, zinc and vitamin B3. Here is my 5 day diary and thoughts on the product...
Day 1
AM- Didn't lather like I was expecting and had a grainy gel consistency. I'm guessing that they're exfoliating microbeads which concerns me as I only exfoliate once a week due to having oily and sensitive skin. Left my skin soft but not as soft as my Garnier Anti-Blackhead Charcoal Cleansing Gel.
PM- Had a really red patch on my right cheek so didn't use my spin brush as I didn't want to irritate it further. Skin felt softer after washing my face with the cleanser for a second time. Not sure how much to use yet as the formula is quite rough against my skin.
Day 2
AM- Redness was visibly reduced this morning, however I'm not sure if it was down to the cleanser or another product in my routine (ie. Overnight Clearing Serum or Fast Track gel). Only rubbed in cleanser for 30 seconds as I'm worried about the cleanser being too harsh on my skin.
PM- Redness has now turned into a whitehead! :( Skin under eyes felt dry and was flakey around a fading blemish. Have found out that witch hazel (in the cleanser) is drying and that it's also in my Overnight Clearing Serum. Might explain why I broke out my first time using the cleanser, as my skin is producing more oil than normal due to the drying effect.
Day 3
AM- Woke up with flakey bits on my forehead and cheeks. Washed my face with the cleanser and it felt soft and smooth but abit tight in places. Might just stick to washing my face with it in the morning and if my skin doesn't improve I'll stop using it altogether. Spot is still very angry and has a big whitehead, but I'm trying not to squeeze or pick at it :/
PM- Tried using hot water to draw the spot/whitehead out but didn't quite work so tried pushing down on it. Trying really hard not to pop it as I don't want another acne scar on my face. Just gonna keep washing it and applying my Fast Track gel. Used my Garnier Micellar Cleansing Gel Wash tonight, so we'll see if it helps to improve my skin.
Day 4
AM- Skin feels much softer after I stopped using the Simple cleanser in the evening. Spot is still there despite using hot water on it- it just isn't budging! :/ I really hope it disappears by the end of the week. Have decided that this cleanser is too drying to use twice a day, so am going to continue using my Garnier Micellar Cleansing Gel Wash in the evenings instead.
PM- Couldn't take it anymore and picked my spot! It got abit bloody but I soaked a cotton pad with micellar water to try and clean it. I then did a workout before having a shower and doing a double cleanse (Micellar Cleansing Gel Wash and B. Clean Sparkling Water Cleanser), just to make sure the wound was properly cleaned so it would heal faster. Then I applied two layers of Fast Track gel to help calm the redness and reduce the size.
Day 5
AM- Spot appears less red and angry and is alot smaller- thank god! I just hope it starts fading by the end of the week. It's scabbed over for now as it was bleeding a lot yesterday, but with regular washing and treating it should go away. Skin wasn't as soft as it was yesterday after using the cleanser. I'll see how my skin looks and feels after washing it again in the evening.
PM- Skin felt bumpy around my chin and not very hydrated. However, after washing my face with the Micellar Cleansing Gel Wash it felt alot softer and brighter. Have decided that after 5 days I'm going to stop using the Simple Daily Skin Detox Purifying Facial Wash.
Overall thoughts: I wouldn't use this cleanser again because on day 1 it broke me out, dried out my skin and I hated the grainy consistency. Will definitely not be repurchasing and will be going back to my trusted Garnier Anti-Blackhead Charcoal Cleansing Gel. I've learnt that my skin loves charcoal and salicylic acid but doesn't get on very well with witch hazel, due to the drying effect. In future, if a product works for me and gives me the results I want then I will stick with it rather than exposing my skin to ingredients/formulas that will irritate it. I have now ordered 3 bottles of the charcoal cleanser and will hopefully receive them within the next few days. In the meantime, I'm going to continue using the Micellar Cleansing Gel Wash as my main cleanser until they arrive :)
I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience with this cleanser and that it helped you to incorporate a new product into your own skincare routine. However, if something really works for your skin, don't risk using something new as you don't know how your skin will react. If you've been thinking about trying this product, then please don't let this review put you off. This was just my personal experience, however you might get a lot better results. Just see it as rough guide into what to expect :) I feel like for a brand targeted at people with sensitive skin, this formula is way too harsh for everyday use. Get it together Simple!
