Pucker Up!

Today's topic is lip balm! :)

With so many different options, how do you know which are the best and how effective they are?? You can spend literally years trying to find the perfect one! It can be a real minefield! However, as with finding a partner, sometimes you have to pucker up a few times in order to find "the one"! In this post I will be discussing a selection of lip balms that I have personally trialed and tested and my overall opinion on them.

So here it goes...

Carmex Cherry Lip Balm (£2.69)
Rating: 4/10
Verdict: Due to the menthol in this product it leaves a tingly sensation on the lips, however I feel like this overpowers the cherry scent. It says on the tube that it "soothes, moisturises and protects". I found that the moisturisation is short lived and leaves my lips feeling drier at the end o the day. I also don't like that you have to use your finger to apply it, as I think that if it's in a tube there should be an applicator. I like the fact that it has an SPF 15 but I wouldn't recommend it for its moisturisation. I've also found that it's not a very good base for lipstick either. Wasn't very impressed with this product as it's meant to be one of the most popular drugstore lip balms.

Vaseline Mirror Mirror, Limited Edition (£2.99)

Rating: 7/10
Verdict: When I first saw this product I bought it as a present for my cousin, however I did think it was abit pricey. Eventually I thought "What the hell!" and treated myself. I loved the design on the tin and that it was Snow White themed. The scent is spiced apple and it seriously does smell of cinnamon! It also has a cute quote on the side that says "Healthy looking lips don't have to be a fairytale". However the actual product didn't really live up to the hype. The tin says "hint of red" however it's more of a translucent red gloss. I tend to use it as a base and top coat for red lipstick as the tint isn't strong enough by itself. Great as a novelty but disappointing as a tinted lip product! On the upside, as with all other Vaseline lip balms it is very moisturising and absorbent however you need to reapply regularly.

Maybelline Baby Lips, Melon Mania (£3.99)

Rating: 7/10
Verdict: This is one of my pricier lip balms that I own, however I think I got it on offer! The solid formula means that it's very easy to apply and alot less messy than ones in tins. I loved the packaging as it is fun and playful. I also liked the different names of all the fruity scents and that they're tinted. Melon Mania smells lush and has a pink translucent gloss which I love as it looks like a lip gloss. However, it isn't very long lasting and rubs off easily. When first applied it feels very moisturising, making my lips feel soft and smooth. I don't use it much anymore as I like to have abit more colour on my lips. I do rate it for how it feels and looks on my lips, however I would have to keep reapplying pretty much every half hour.

Nivea Lip Butter, Vanilla & Macadamia (£2.09)

Rating: 6/10
Verdict: This lip butter smells amazing! I don't usually like nuts but this combination is heavenly. On applying, this product feels abit greasy but very moisturising at the same time and absorbs really well. It's not a great base for lipstick or gloss, however it leaves your lips feeling pampered and soft. Like most lip products it rubs off easily but with a product that smells this good, it's not a problem! I don't actually use this product at the moment as I wasn't impressed with the overall result, however scent wise this is a winner every time :)

In conclusion lip balms can be great for dry, chapped lips but finding the right one can be a real task! Out of all the ones I've tried I feel like Vaseline is my trusty go-to lip balm. Even though I rated Mirror Mirror down for lack of tint, I love the consistency of Vaseline lip products as they're non greasy and absorbent. Although I've always bought the tins, they also have a range of solid stick formulas as well, which I might have to give a try solely for ease of use. My favourite so far is the aloe vera one, however if we're basing this on aesthetics and novelty alone I would have to say the Mirror Mirror Limited Edition Vaseline.

For my next Skin Deep Snippet I will be choosing a lip balm to trial and test from the following options:
  • Lypsyl Lip Balm (£3.29)
  • Blistex Intense Moisturiser (£2.69)
  • EOS Lip Balm (£6.00)
  • Palmer's Ultra Moisturising Lip Balm (£1.99)
  • Lanolips Lemonaid Lip Treatment (£7.99)
I will report back on my findings in the next couple of weeks, so let me know which one you'd like me to try otherwise I will just pick at random!
