Skincare Secrets

Welcome to my beauty blog!

I decided to create this blog to share my skincare tips and knowledge with you all. I believe that feeling beautiful comes from within and that starts with your skincare routine. Some of you may be thinking "Surely washing my face is enough?" This couldn't be further from the truth! Good skincare habits include cleansing, toning, moisturising and exfoliating. It is not enough to simply wash your face. It needs alot of pampering and prepping. Lack of a good skincare regime can be damaging to the skin and can leave you with with clogged pores from oil and dirt build up, which can then lead to problem skin.

Here's a quick breakdown of the different steps for good skincare:

Cleansing:-

Morning- Cleansing should be done first thing after you wake up. This includes investing in a facial wash. These can come in many different formulas such as cream, gel, scrub and foam. They also make facial washes for different skin types including dry, normal, combination, sensitive or oily skin. My skin type falls into the oily category so I tend to stick to products that prevent and reduce the appearance of spots. For example, I'm currently using Simple (Spotless Skin) Triple Action Face Wash.

Night- Before you go to bed you need to cleanse your face so its clear of makeup, which prevents pores from clogging up. This can involve makeup remover and face wipes, however Micellar Water seems to be a very sought after product right now. There are many different brands of Micellar Water, however I have been using Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water and B.Pure Micellar Cleansing Wipes for the past couple of years. You can also get deep cleansing lotions for penetrating through the skin's layers to lift out excess dirt/oil that makeup removers can't reach.

Toning:-

Toning is important as it tightens and reduces the appearance of pores, giving a clearer complexion whilst rejuvenating the skin. Again you can get toners for different skin types which do different things. For example the Garnier Botanical range has 3 different toners: Nourishing Honeyflower for very dry skin, Refreshing Aloe Vera for combination skin and Soothing Rose Water for dry and sensitive skin. I've tried several different toners and started with the Rose Water one by Garnier, however I soon realised that I needed a toner that was targeted at oily, rather than dry, skin. So I now look for toners that purify and remove excess sebum.

Moisturising:-

This is about replacing the moisture in your skin, which can be affected by the elements and dry out your skin. By using a good moisturiser you are hydrating the skin and repairing the moisture barrier so that the skin doesn't get damaged by the environment. It takes awhile to find a good moisturiser so you may have to try out a few. Ideally you want one that suits your skin type and absorbs well into the skin, making it feel soft and firm. I would avoid formulas that are too thick and heavy as they can leave your skin feeling sticky and greasy.

Exfoliating:-

Facial scrubs are formulated to remove the build up of dead skin cells using microbeads or granules sourced from natural extractsThese should be used between 1-4 times a week, depending on your skin type. You simply massage the scrub into your face and wash off with warm water. Your skin is left feeling thoroughly refreshed and silky smooth. I would highly recommend the St. Ives range of facial scrubs which are formulated for different purposes, such as Spot Control, and contain natural extracts. You can also get body scrubs which are used for the same purpose and should be used 1-2 times a week.

That's it for now, I hope this has helped to clarify the different stages of skincare and what all the jargon means! In upcoming posts I will be sharing with you my own skincare products that I have trialed and tested, giving my thoughts on them as well as weighing up the pros and cons.

But for now...
